Daniel Wallis at the English Schools Final!!

Daniel Wallis, our very own Fitstuff expert, was selected to represent Surrey at the English Schools Championships in Birmingham. The home grown, Guildford athlete has developed phenomally in the 800m, even though he predominantly wanted to focus on longer distances. Competing in the 800m at the Championships started off well for young athlete as he cruised through the heats with ease. Later that day he then raced in the semi-final, leading the majority of it and finishing in third! This, therefore meant that he had secured one of the qualifying places for the final on the Sunday, and needless to say, he was pretty extactic about it.

The Sunday was a mild and overcast day with a steady breeze flowing through the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham. At 5:30pm the 800m finalist gathered at the start finish line and took their lanes. Wallis, positioned in lane 7, started steadily and settled into the back of the pack to avoid any scuffles. As the race progressed he remained in this position and as the athletes moved into the home straight the leaders had already solidified their spots. Daniel finished the last 100m strong and almost grabbed 5th position but had to settle for 6th.

As this was only the first year that he had decided to focus primarily on this distance it is a remarkable achievement to have got to the final with some of these, already hardened middle distance sprinters. Daniel came away from the competition with a new personal best and an incredible amount of experience in this very popular distance. He now hopes to continue bettering his time over 800m and if he continues with this consitant improvement curve, England vests and maybe even a GB vest could lay in wait!
